The seventh year of the world music festival in Bratislava will be held from August 18th to 21th in the historical center of Bratislava, and musicians from Slovakia, Argentina, Egypt, the Cape Verde Islands, Portugal, Poland and Ukraine will perform at it. Its biggest international star will be Vieux Farka Touré, composer, guitarist, son of the famous Ali Farka Touré, a three-time Grammy winner from Mali. In the next few days, Tabanka from the Cape Verde Islands, Ricardo Silva, an excellent Portuguese guitar player, will present himself in Slovakia for the first time. South America will be represented by the Guanaco Trio, and the legendary Adel Shams el-Din and Tarek Abdallah will come from Egypt.
From Slovakia, Sisa Michalidesová with guests, Ildikó Kali, Júlia Kozáková, hooligan-folk trio Varkocs and group Alapastel with vocal group Neha! will perform.

Wernyhora specializes mainly in the musical traditions of the Carpathians living on the Polish-Ukrainian border (Lemkov and Huculov). Their music, the beauty of the instrumental passages, and the unusual voice of the solo singer were enthusiastically received by the audience at more than 20 concerts last year. At the beginning of June 2022, they published a new single with the song Żurba, which is also a protest against the war in Ukraine.
Volodymyr Voyt plays the traditional Ukrainian stringed instrument bandura, which is used as an accompaniment to the singing of folk and religious songs or epics from the Middle Ages to the present day. Volodymyr is a permanent member of the Ukrainian National Folklore Ensemble and has also performed as a soloist in many countries around the world.
Their guest will be Michal Smetanka, an excellent multi-instrumentalist and singer from eastern Slovakia. As a soloist, he performed in several folklore ensembles and performed at dozens of festivals in Slovakia, Europe and Asia. In 2008, he became the holder of the prestigious award for folk producers – the King of European Folk Crafts. He founded and leads the group KarpaTon, which is dedicated to the acoustic fusion of traditional Carpathian musical culture into new musical genres.

Júlia Kozáková is a singer who has a very broad artistic scope. In the spring of 2022, she released her debut album called Manuša, on which she interprets Roma folk songs from various regions of Slovakia. She recorded the album in collaboration with dulcimer Ľubomír Gašpar, violinist Viliam Didiáš, violist Vojtech “Bélu” Botoš and double bassist Jáno Rig. Manuša’s album was the most played record at MergingArts Global Radio in Boston in mid-June and ranked 25th on the Transglobal World Music Chart in July.
Ricardo Silva is considered one of the new heroes of the Portuguese fado guitar. It is characterized by an exceptional playing technique. In 2005, he won first prize as an instrumentalist at the Grande Noite do Fado competition. Before embarking on a successful solo career, he accompanied many fado singers with his guitar, including the phenomenal Mariza.
Tabanka is a group whose music is inspired by the work of Cape Verdean artists. They are representatives of the funaná style, which they have a fresh and contemporary view of. Their performance is cheerful, energetic and joyful dance music. Funaná is a style derived from the music of the descendants of slaves, mixed with contemporary pop and jazz. Tabanka knows how to really pump it up live, so few people can sit still at their concerts.

The music composed by Sisa Michalidesová can be characterized as a mixture of jazz, film and theater music, classical and other genres. Her albums have been awarded several times with various prizes from music critics and experts in Slovakia. The album Master and Margaréta, based on the novel by Mikhail Bulgakov, was in the top five in the category Jazz music, and the album Commedia, inspired, among other things, by Balkan music, made it to the top five in the category World music/Folk. On this album, she collaborated with top musicians such as the violinist Stano Palúch, dulcimer Marcel Comendant, Serbian accordionist Marko Kukobat and others.

Guanaco Trio is a trio of musicians and composers working in Buenos Aires, who were enchanted by Argentine music. In the spring of 2022, they recorded their debut album, which contains both their own compositions and popular melodies based on Argentine folklore. Although they only performed in Argentina during the Covid-19 pandemic, this summer they went on their first foreign tour, during which they will stop in Spain, France, Austria and Slovakia.
Adel Shams el-Din is a master of playing the riqq tambourine and one of the founders of the world-famous Sufi music group Al-Kindi (founded in 1983 in the Syrian city of Aleppo). Adel has also collaborated with other world music stars such as Jean-Michel Jarre, Zakir Hussein or Renauld Garcia-Fons and has skillfully recorded more than 50 albums of various genres.
Tarek Abdallah is a composer, an oud player from Alexandria, who is intimately familiar with traditional Egyptian music composed for the instrument. Together with Adel, they form an exceptional duo, combining fluid improvisations on the oud with complex rhythmic cycles. They released an album called “Wasla, an Egyptian musical suite”. This exceptional recording won the Songlines magazine award as the best recording of 2015, and visitors to the World Music Festival will hear it live in Bratislava.

Ildikó Kali recorded an experimental album with poetry set to music by Ján Botta, a Slovak poet of the Romantic period (19th century). Thanks to modern arrangements, old ballads and rumors got a current dimension, and it turned out that they are still interesting even from the textual side. The result is the album Zlatá panna, which was nominated for the Radio_Head Award in the category World music/Folk for the year 2021. His compositions are included in the world charts and successfully represent the Slovak world music scene. On the international music server Roots Music Report, the album received 4 stars out of 5. As part of the World Music Festival in Bratislava, Ildikó Kali will present the album Zlatá panna in collaboration with guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Peter Luh.
Varkocs was founded in 2018 as a special project around Erik Turtev, a virtuoso drum player. Since their inception, they have impressed with their unconventional approach and “hooligan” style.
Varkocs is a popular concert band precisely because of its punk approach and strong energy. This year they released their debut album Rye Island in digital form. In May 2022, they represented the Slovak world music scene at the Czech Music Crossroads showcase festival in Ostrava.

Alapastel is a special project of the Slovak musician and composer Lukáš Bulk, which combines elements of ambient, classical and electronica. On the album Ceremony, Lukáš creates remarkable musical collages. Some of the compositions of this “healing ceremony” contain excerpts from the music of Richard Grossman, based on traditional shamanism from the Amazon region. In addition to Lukáš, the co-creators of the album are sound designer Adam Dekan and violinist Ján Kružliak Jr. Fine art and dance are also an important part of the Ceremony.

Vieux Farka Touré is a musician from Mali, son of the really famous father Ali Farka Touré, winner of three Grammy awards. Vieux Farka Touré tried to go his own way. He collaborated with musicians such as Erik Krasno, Dave Matthews and John Scofield on the album The Secret, with Idan Raichel on the project -Touré-Raichel Collective – or with the American singer Julia Easterlin. In June 2022, Vieux Farka Touré surprised with a new album called Les Racines (Roots), which immediately won the acclaim of music critics. After years of experimentation, it returns to the strong roots of African blues. This excellent, virtuoso guitarist will present this music as part of the European tour, also in Bratislava.
