TAREK ABDALLAH & ADEL SHAMS EL-DIN
Egypt20.8.2022, Zichy palace's courtyard, Ventúrska 9, Bratislava
Tarek Abdallah & Adel Shams el-Din is an Egyptian duo celebrating the Golden Age of the Egyptian oud music. Tarek Abdallah is a composer, oud player and musicologist from Alexandria, well-versed in the traditional repertoire of the Egyptian oud. Adel Shams el-Din is an Alexandrine of an earlier generation and is a master of the riqq frame drum and co-founder of the well-known sufi music group Al-Kindi (founded in 1983 in Aleppo, Syria). Adel has also been invited to perform with international artists such as Jean-Michel Jarre, Zakir Hussein and Renauld Garcia-Fons, and he has recorded more than 50 CDs of various genres. His solo album “Forty Rhythms of the Middle East” was released in 2005. Tarek draws inspiration from the Golden Age of the solo Egyptian oud (1910-1930) in his hometown Alexandria, which is at the center of his musicological research. Together with Adel they form an extraordinary duo combining fluid oud improvisations and the complex rhythmic cycles which enable them to create something fresh and original from an almost lost tradition. Both musicians live in France now and released an album titled “Wasla, Egyptian Musical Suite” on the French label Buda Musique. This extraordinary recording was chosen as the best album of 2015 by Songlines magazine and the visitors of World Music Festival Bratislava will have an opportunity to listen to it in a live performance.
